James Luke “J.L.” Dunlap

James Luke ""J.L."" Dunlap, 77, passed away at his home on the morning of March 1, 2012. J.L. was born February 21, 1935 in Stokes County to Herman and Ollie Duggins Dunlap. He graduated from Pine Hall High School in 1954 and married the love of his life, Darlene Marshall of Walnut Cove in July of 1955. J.L. attended Salem Chapel Christian Church in Walnut Cove. He loved riding his motorcycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway, wood working in his shop, and tinkering with anything that had moving parts. He was a retired machinist from Piedmont Airlines / US Airways after 37 years of faithful service and also a retired firefighter from the Salem Chapel Volunteer Fire Department. J.L. was the President of the Walkertown Booster Club for many years. He was also a pilot and enjoyed flying every chance he got. He was an incredible man who taught his family how to love by loving them deeply. Words cannot express their grief in losing him and their joy in his Heavenly homecoming. J.L.'s greatest love was being with his family, especially as it grew. In addition to his parents, J.L. was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Dunlap and sister, Doris Ellis; his mother-in-law (Second Mom), Lillie Mae Marshall . ""Papaw"" is survived by his wife of 56 years, Darlene Dunlap; his children: Cindy Cook and Husband Lance, Darrell Dunlap and wife Sandy, and Rhonda Dunlap with Stephen Angel. His grandchildren: Leanna (Blake), Meagan (Zack), Jamie, Brittany, Luke, Landon & Kelly (Jason); and great-grandsons: Jaylan, Leeland, and Hayden. Additionally, J.L. is survived by his sister, Ila Mae (Junior) Tudor; sister-in-law, Sue Dunlap; brother-in-law, James Ellis; and many loving nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at Salem Chapel Christian Church on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 3:00p.m. with the Rev. Stephen Webb officiating. The family will receive guests at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall on Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 6:00 - 8:00p.m. A graveside service will follow on Monday, March 5 at 11:00a.m. at Gardens Of Memory Cemetery in Walkertown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Stokes County, P.O. Box 863, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.
