Mr. James ""Jim"" Merritt Cogdill, 70, of Clemmons died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 23, 1939 in Knoxville, TN to the late Bruce and Mable Haggard Cogdill. Upon graduating from the University of Tennessee with a B.S. Degree in Industrial Engineering, he was employed with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 32 years of service. Upon his retirement from R.J. Reynolds in 1994 as Director of Facilities, he enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, church activities, playing golf, and a passion for the University of Tennessee football. He was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Surviving is his wife, Margaret Hornsby Cogdill of the home; a son, Timothy Edward Cogdill of Raleigh; a daughter, Melissa Cogdill Shofner and husband Kyle of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Merritt Lee Cogdill of Oxford, Sydney Katelyn Shofner and Austin Kyle Shofner of Clemmons; a brother, Philip David Cogdill and wife Beth of Tucson, AZ; a niece, Kira Michelle Cogdill of Raleigh; and a sister, Betty Cogdill Blaylock and husband Everett of Knoxville, TN. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 18 at Ardmore Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Ireland officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ardmore Baptist Church Building Fund, 501 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
