James Augustus Brewer Jr., 97, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday evening, February 5, 2021 at the home in which he was born. He was born on April 11, 1923 in Forsyth County to the late James Augustus Brewer Sr. and Sarah Foltz Brewer. He graduated from Griffith High School. He was a chartered member of Advent Moravian Church and served on the Graveyard Committee, Board of Trustees and a Diener.
He grew up in the family farming business and expanded it to include dairy farming in addition to crop production. After farming for many years, he developed and operated Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Also, along with his wife, he established and operated Ceramics by Omeda. Upon retirement, he remained active in the many outdoor activities he loved and enjoyed vegetable gardening well into his later years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Omeda Johnson Brewer; his daughters, Vickie Lynn Brewer and Toni Brewer Matthews; sisters, Ila Louise Brewer and Marie Brewer Nifong. He is survived by his daughters, Diane Edwards (Reg Fidoe) of Oriental, NC and Betty Jo Martin (Mike) of Winston-Salem; 4 grandchildren, Sonya Matthews Withers (Ed) of Clayton, NC, Angela Edwards Cowey (Elliot) of New Bern, NC, Bruce Martin (Angie) of Clemmons, NC and Amanda Martin Fine (James) of Winston-Salem, NC; 5 great-grandchildren, Rebecca Withers Gurney (Avery), Tyler Cameron Cowey, Rylee Ann Martin, Olivia Jo Martin and Ila Jo Fine; two very special people, Jerry Matthews and Patt Brown; and his companion, Scooter.
Due to COVID-19, a private family graveside service will be held at Parklawn Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Tim Sapp officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Advent Moravian Church, 1514 W. Clemmonsville Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
