KERNERSVILLE - Mr. James ""Bill"" Murphy Black, 84, died Friday, July 4, 2014 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. James was born on April 16, 1930 in Rutherford Co. to Daisy Pearl Steadman Black and Z. Taft Black. He retired from the US Air Force with 20 years of service to our country and was a member of the American Legion. He later established a 20-year truck driving career, working for McLean Trucking, Signal Trucking and Yellow Freight Company. James had a great appreciation for country music, absorbing songs for hours when returning from his trips on the road, but most of all was strongly devoted to his family.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy Chancy Black.
Surviving are his wife, Christine Barlow Black; two daughters, Melanie Black Dubis (husband, Jeffrey) and Sherri Black Wilson (husband, Danny); three grandchildren, Meagan, Ashley and Hannah Wilson; four sisters, Ophelia Fortune, Catherine McDaniel, Dorothy McGalliard and Edna Weller; and many special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. on Monday, July 7, 2014 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton. Burial will follow the service at Burke Memorial Park also in Morganton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Ln. Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to James' caregivers, Amanda, Jeanne, Penny and Rachel.
