Greensboro - James Henry Bennett, Sr., 85, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Beacon Place of Greensboro. He was born December 21, 1927 in Stokes Co. to the late James Foy and Etta Vaden Bennett. Mr. Bennett was the last surviving charter member of Northwest Baptist Church formerly Honey in the Rock Baptist Church in Greensboro, where he served as a Deacon, Trustee and Sunday School Superintendent. He retired from Lorillard Tobacco Co. after 33 years of service. One of James's many hobbies was his love for bee keeping. He was a member of the Guilford County Bee Keepers Association. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Magdalene Collins Bennett; and four brothers and four sisters. Surviving are his daughter, Laura Brown and husband, Wayne of Greensboro; his son, James H. Bennett, Jr. and wife Susan of Summerfield; five grandchildren, Matthew Bennett and wife, Cheryl, Jason Brown and wife, Melissa, Ashley Miller and husband, Derrick, Anna Tinch and husband, Duane, Ashley Bunce and husband, Jeremy; five great-grandchildren, Allison and Dylan Miller, Hannah Bennett, Jackson Tinch, and Chase Bunce; three sisters, Agnes Eaton, Almergene Davis and husband, Seavie and Ailene Huffman. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Northwest Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2013 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Beacon Place - Hospice at Greensboro, 2502 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
