WINSTON SALEM-Jack Avery Gourley, 86, passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 3, 1923 in Forsyth Co. to the late Thomas Ruffin and Salley Lancaster Gourley. Mr. Gourley was a member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, a charter member of the United Methodist Men, the Robert West Sunday school class, and Treasurer. He retired in 1985 from Salem Steel with 40 years of service, and after retirement he worked part-time for an additional 23 years which totaled 63 years of service with Salem Steel. Jack was a United States Army Veteran having served 25 months in the European Theatre. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, and five sisters. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Dorene Turner Gourley; two children, Rebecca Petersen and husband Tonny of Winston Salem, and Steven Gourley and wife Brenda of Walkertown; four grandsons, Kenneth Gourley (Neesha), Dwayne Gourley (Michelle), Lee Livengood (Valerie), and Robert Petersen (Susan); and eleven great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 pm Sunday, November 15, 2009 at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Autrey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm Saturday November 14, 2009 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel.
