J. Kenneth Burge

Mr. J. Kenneth (Ken) Burge, 90, of Winston-Salem entered into the more immediate presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 6, 2017. He was born in Winston-Salem on November 24, 1926, to Floyd S, Burge Sr. and Vivian Saylor Burge. Ken was an honor graduate of Reynolds High School and N.C. State University, receiving a B.S. Degree in Architectural Engineering. During WWII he served in the U.S Army in the Philippine Islands Campaign. After graduation, he joined his father's firm, Floyd S. Burge Construction Company and coordinated the organization of Burge Enterprises, the architectural millwork firm of Home Lumber Company and the holding company of BB&L, serving simultaneously as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of all four companies from 1966 until retirement in 1989. He was listed in numerous national publications: Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in U.S Executives, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who World Wide and International Who's Who of Professionals and Personalities of the South; also listed in the Cambridge England International Publications Men of Achievement and Directory of International Biogragh. He was an active member of Ardmore Moravian Church for 86 years, serving at various times as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Elders, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Superintendent of Sunday School, Chairman of the Christian Education Commission, Choir Member (61 years) and Adult Sunday School Teacher. In the Southern Province of the Moravian Church of America, he served at various times as Chairman of the Board of Homeland Missions, Chairman of the Central Board of Trustees, member of the Executive Committee of the Central Board of Elders, President of the Provincial Young Adult Organization; member of the Provincial Planning Council, Laurel Ridge Camp and Conference Grounds Planning Committee, Moravian Minister's Pension Plan Committee and as a Delegate to numerous Provincial Synods. He was active in numerous civic activities, serving as President and member of the Board of Directors of the Winston-Salem Civitan Club, member of the Civitan District Governor's Cabinet, member of the District Advisory Council of The Small Business Administration by Congressional Appointment, member of the Executive Committee of the Forsyth County Development Corporation and Forsyth County Investment Corporation, coach and member of the Board of Directors of the Winston-Salem National Little League, Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce, Precinct Chairman and member of the Executive Committee of the 5th District Republican Party and member of the Board of Trustees of Salem Academy and College. He was preceded in death by, his Parents; brother, Floyd S. Burge, Jr.; nephew, Floyd S. (Smitty) Burge, III; niece, Pamela Burge Ledbetter; and son-in-law, Richard Disher. Surviving are his wife of 65 years Emily Shaffner Burge; one daughter, Sandra Burge Disher of East Bend; one son, Wayne Douglas Burge and wife Tammy of Winston-Salem; one grandson Ryan Hamilton Burge and wife Danielle of Winston-Salem; one sister, JoAnn Long and husband, Finlay of Birmingham, Alabama; one nephew Finlay Long III and wife, Kristin; and five nieces, Beverly Burge Dillon and husband Lee, Jennifer Burge-Carter, Martha Burge Haley and husband Rob, Ann Long Campbell and husband John, and Beth Long Gurkin and husband Troy. Also surviving are, brother-in-law, Donald F. Shaffner and wife Martha; and cherished nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Ardmore Moravian Church with Rev. Arkon Stewart officiating. Interment will follow at Salem Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 12:45 pm Saturday at the Fellowship Hall of Ardmore Moravian Church. The family would like to extend their heart-felt gratitude to Ken's wonderful caregivers at Forsyth Memorial Hospitals' Gastroenterology and Palliative Care units and the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
