Isaac Mathis, Sr.

Mr. Isaac Thomas Mathis, Sr., 85, passed away January 6, 2018. He was born March 6, 1932 in Wilkes County to the late Millard Monroe Mathis and Era Foster Mathis. He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Kernersville for 57 years, and was a former choir member, Deacon and Treasurer. He enjoyed doing mission work and helping others in their times of need. Mr. Mathis served four years in the U.S. Air Force and upon completion of his service, he began a 20-year career as an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA. He subsequently owned and operated Mathis Grading for over 35 years. He took joy in boating and camping with his family. Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his sister Shirley and his brother Royce. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty Mayberry Mathis; four children, Tom Mathis, Jr., Scott Thomas Mathis (Renee), Carol Mathis Collins (Shawn) and Lynda Mathis Doomy (John); Six grandchildren, John Doomy, Jr., Lenora Mathis, Benjamin Doomy, Alexis Collins, Megan Mathis and Parker Mathis Collins; a brother, Gurney Mathis (Peggy). A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Kernersville with Dr. Stephen Martin officiating. Burial with military honors will follow the service at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem. Visitation is at 1:00pm prior to the service in the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Kernersville, 401 Oakhurst St., Kernersville, NC 27284.
