Mr. Irvin Ray Nelson, 72, of Kernersville, NC, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2012 at his home. Mr. Nelson was born on July 22, 1939 in Forsyth County, NC to the late Samuel Nelson and Nancy Smith. Irvin retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company where he worked as a Machinist. He was an avid North Carolina Tarheel fan and loved NASCAR. Irvin enjoyed the time he spent at Bowman Gray Stadium with his son Ryan. He also loved the outdoors and enjoyed all kinds of music. Irvin loved all of his family deeply and especially loved being a grandfather. He never met a stranger and will always be remembered for his witty sense of humor. Preceding Mr. Nelson in death along with his parents are a daughter, Tonya Thorpe; and a brother, Hoyd Nelson. Surviving Mr. Nelson are his wife, Shelby Wiles Nelson of the home; a son, Ryan Nelson (Crystal) of Winston-Salem; four daughters, Amber Nelson Kistler (Jamie) of Burlington, NC, Debbie Harp (Jesse) of King, NC, Karen Carlton of Kernersville, NC, and Angela Wilson (Darrell) of Lexington, NC; eight grandchildren, Bryce Ray Nelson, Averi Rae Kistler, Joseph Weavil (Jodie), Jacob Weavil, Jesse Jr. Harp, Joshua Harp, Alisa Harp, and Sherri Harp. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Ryan Bennett officiating. Burial will follow the service at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
