Kernersville: Mrs. Irma C. Carswell, age 89, passed away Friday January 8, 2016 at the KBR Hospice Home surrounded by her loving family. She had been a resident of Trinity Glen in Winston-Salem following a stroke in February 2014. Irma was a treasured daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
She was born May 29, 1926 in Clemmons, NC to Elmer and Gladys Canter, who preceded her in death. She was the 4th of 7 children. All her siblings have predeceased her. They were Bill, Roy, Gene and Bryant Canter, and sisters Hazel Canter Brown, and Jane Canter Wyrick. She was also predeceased by beloved son-in-law, Bill Barlow, in 2003.
She was married in 1947 to R.F. Carswell, JR. who predeceased her January 7, 1997 after 50 years of marriage. She is survived by her four children, whom she cherished; Marie C. Barlow-West (Wayne), Stephen R. Carswell (Susan), Vicki C. Kiser (Terry) all of Kernersville, and Ronald T. Carswell (Janice) of East Bend, and a step-son, Bob Rigby (carol) Blackpool, UK. She is survived by one precious granddaughter, Sydney Carswell Douglas (Ethan) of Durham and three great-grandchildren, Aidan, Julian and Evan Elizabeth. Also surviving are seven step-grandchildren, and eleven step great-grandchildren. Also mourning her loss are 9 nieces and nephews, whom she loved. She leaves many cherished friends, especially Ruth, Jessie and Flora who have remained faithful to her with their visits.
She retired in 1986 from Kings Dept. Store after 18 years of service. She amazed everyone with her gifts of sewing, decorating, cooking and hosting of any event. She was a gracious lady, always displaying and attitude of hospitality and kindness, and will be missed by all.
She was an active member of Edgewood Baptist Church for over 70 years, (previously City View Baptist) as long as health permitted. She was a member of the Senior Ladies SS class. She served on various committees within the church for many years.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 pm Monday January 12, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel with Rev. Kent Hogan and Rev. Karen Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park beside R. F. to spend eternity together.
The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support during these past two years. Mother we love you and will miss you. You were the best mom and we had a great life. Thank you for loving and caring for us and always being there. We love you, your children.
Flowers will be accepted and donations can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, Winston-Salem, NC
