Irene Schmidt Nolte

Mrs. Irene Wilhelmina Schmidt Nolte, 97, died peacefully at Salemtowne Retirement Community in Winston-Salem on December 29, 2008. She was born in Ferguson, Missouri, on September 3, 1911, to William O. and Fannie Meints Schmidt. After attending Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska, she taught in a one-room school in Sweet Springs, Missouri, and then in St. Louis, Missouri, where she taught 42 students in grades 1 through 4. Mrs. Nolte was later employed as secretary at Northwestern University, where she prepared and edited manuscripts for publication in books and professional journals. When her husband went to Yale University for graduate work she became administrative assistant to Professor Samuel M. Brownell at Yale. In 1965, she joined the staff of the newly opened North Carolina School of the Arts as administrative assistant to the president, the administrative director, and the dean of the school of music. The following year she became the secretary to R. B. Crawford, president of the NCSA Foundation, Inc. She concluded her career at NCSA in 1976. Mrs. Nolte was known for her prize-winning handwork, which included knitting and crocheting. Christmas angels were just one of her crocheted specialties. She was also a loyal fan of Duke basketball. Mrs. Nolte was preceded in death by her grandson, David, in 1980, and her husband of 59 years, Dr. Ewald V. Nolte, in 1991. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Iona Schmidt and Leona Blair, and a brother, Marvin Schmidt. Survivors include her daughter, Darla N. (Warren) Yaun of Alexandria, VA, her son, Loren W. (Carol) Nolte of Durham, NC; eleven grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Pastor James Knuth officiating. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Irene S. Nolte Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. John's Lutheran School, 2415 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, 27103.
