Ira Shumate

Mr. Ira Clyde Shumate, 85, passed away Saturday, September 4, 2021, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. He was born in McDowell Co., West Virginia on September 29, 1935, the son of the late Leonard and Lollie Shumate. Mr. Shumate proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He retired from Owens-Brockway Glass Plant in 1994 with 15 years of service and he also worked at Piedmont Publishing Co. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Shumate; a daughter, Patricia Pesek; a grandson, Timothy Wayne Shumate; and a brother, Raymond V. Shumate. He is survived by his wife, Jean Humble Shumate; three grandchildren, Adam Pesek, Nicholas Pesek and Jessica Aycock (Nick); and two great-grandchildren, Will and Alex Aycock. A graveside service with military rites will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2021, at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall with Rev. Frank Shumate officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. The family respectfully asks all who attend to please wear a mask and social distance.
