HARTSELL Mr. Ira Cleveland Hartsell, 77, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, January 22, 2009 at his home. He was born September 5, 1931 in Cabarrus County to Daniel Cleveland and Rhoda Paige Hartsell. Mr. Hartsell attended the University of Southern California, Georgia Tech and Georgia State. He loved college and professional football. His favorite college team was The University of Southern Mississippi. He also loved to read. He was a member of First Alliance Church, and as a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, served a tour of duty in Africa. Ira relocated to Winston-Salem after Hurricane Katrina destroyed his residence August 29, 2005. He had lived in Long Beach, Mississippi for 29 years on the Gulf of Mexico and retired from Alcan Cable in 1992. He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers. Surviving are his wife, Ann Steelman Hartsell of Winston-Salem; two sons, Gary Nathan Hartsell of Smyrna, GA and Michael Eugene Hartsell of Clayton, NC; a stepson, Steve F. Lewis, Jr. of Yadkinville, NC; two grandchildren, Ednarose Marie Saucier and Kyle Morrison Lewis, both of Long Beach, MS; and his mother-in-law, Sallie Virginia Miller Steelman. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Jeff Lonsinger officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 424 E. 92nd St., New York, NY 10128-6804.
