Ima Newman

Mrs. Ima Celeste Combs Newman, 97, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation. She was born November 4, 1920 in Carroll Co., VA the daughter of the late Demps and Lucy Cagle Combs. As the wife of a minister, she was involved with many churches over the years. She was a member of Paul's Creek Baptist Church for many years and most recently a member of Becks Baptist Church. Mrs. Newman will be remembered as a hardworking, kind Christian woman, who loved her family dearly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Burlie Edward Newman; a son, Gerald Newman; a son-in-law, Foy McMillian; three sisters, Lessie Leonard, Ilva Vass and Joyce King and an infant brother, Wade Combs. She is survived by two daughters, Joella Snody (Mike) and Barbara McMillian both of Rural Hall; a son, Jack Newman (Pat) of Advance; nine grandchildren; Sharon S. Flynt, Susan S. Hindle, Mike Snody, Jr., Carrie McMillian, Jennifer M. Chilton, Leslie N. Madren, Chad Newman, Seth Newman and Drew Newman; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Newman of Rural Hall; a sister, Elza Jones of Winston-Salem; and two brothers, Marvin Combs (Vera) and Verlon Combs (Hazel) both of Cana, VA. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2018 at Hayworth-Miller Chapel with Rev. Barry Leonard and Rev. Verlon Combs officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 this evening Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. The family would like to send a special thank you to Brittany Jackson for all of the love and care shown to their mother.
