Winston-Salem- Mr. Hugh Dorsey Burrell, 93, passed away September 26, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born September 22, 1918 in Rabun County, GA to the late Herschel Lee Burrell and Addie Welch Burrell. Mr. Burrell was a member of Hopewell Moravian Church and was co-owner of United Engineering Machine Shop for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Pioneer Masonic Lodge #685. His hobbies included carving duck decoys, weaving baskets, refinishing antiques, gardening, and attending horse shows. Mr. Burrell was preceded in death by his wife, Orpha Holbrook Burrell; a son, Jimmy Dorsey Burrell; two sisters and four brothers. He is survived by a daughter, Nancy B. Cheek and husband Ron of Lexington; a son, David Burrell and wife Nayda of Walnut Cove; six grandchildren, Jeff Burrell, Lisa Martin, Jason Cheek, Jayson Nadal, Jessica Weaver, and Sandra Rosas; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Adilene Davis and Mildred Bennett of Canton, GA and Virginia Lanning of Brevard, NC. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held at 12:30pm on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Parklawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Walter Bishop officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 12:00 noon at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
