Mr. Howard Stephen Sexton, 87of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, October 2, 2008 at the Oaks at Forsyth Nursing Center. Mr. Sexton was born September 14, 1921 in Maitland, West Virginia to Howard Roscoe and Novilla Mallory Sexton. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was retired after 37 years of service from AT&T. Mr. Sexton was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church for 53 years; a member of the AT&T Telephone Pioneers and as a active member of the AT&T Telephone Pioneers, Howard led the painting of US Maps of the Schools all around the county. His zest for life was evident as he water skied, jumped on the trampoline and road roller coasted into his seventies. A man of few words, when he spoke, he was lucid, humorous, optimistic and insightful. Anne and Howard were a devoted and loving couple, they enjoyed a full life together, making the most of each day. Howard was always the optimist, ready to travel, tell a joke and spend time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed traveling with Anne to Europe, Hawaii, and across the United States. Howard bravely served in WWII and wrote brilliant letters home from the front lines which were published in the community newspapers. We will miss his laugh, his smile, and his presence. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Margaret Graybeal, Helen Sampson, Charles Sexton and Nancy Murrell. Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Anne Reeves Sexton of the home; three children; Stephen and Elena Sexton of Burgaw, NC, Synthia and Dale Folwell and Martha Martin of Winston-Salem; grandchildren; Robert Martin, Anna Folwell, Stephen Folwell, Ryan Martin, Dylan Martin and Dalton Folwell who preceded his grandfather in death; a sister Betty Roland of West Jefferson, a brother, Doug and Mary Sexton of Johnson City, NY. Mr. Sexton will lie in state from 1:00-2:00 pm prior to the Service. The Funeral Service will be conducted 2:00 pm Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Ardmore United Methodist Church with Dr. John Franklin Howard officiating. The Family will receive friends following the Service in the Church Fellowship Hall.
