Howard Austin Perry, Sr.

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Howard Austin Perry, Sr., passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014 after an illness. Howard was born in 1924 in Jersey City, NJ. He was preceded in death by a son, Howard Perry, Jr.; a daughter, Marguerite Perry Wassong; and two sisters, Ann and Marie. Howard is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marguerite Stemmle Perry; two sons, Edward and Richard Perry; 14 grandchildren, Terry Barko, Richard Lange, David Lange, April Carter, Joseph Wassong, Jr., Mathew Wassong, Edward Perry Jr., Adam Perry, Ryan Perry, Chelsea Perry, Abigail Muller, Jacob Perry, Benjamin Perry, Dakota Perry; and 20 great grandchildren.

As a young married man, Howard played semi-pro football and baseball. In later life, he became a private pilot. Howard attended Long Island University for an undergraduate degree in History and New York University for his Doctor of Law degree. He was sworn in as a Supreme Court Lawyer in Washington, DC. He was a Labor Relations Lawyer for Republic Aviation, Black Clawson and Vicks Corp. and also had a private practice. In the mid 1960's, he gave up the practice of Law to move to Albany, NY and run the local Roto-Rooter franchise for 10 years. He then moved to Winston-Salem where he and his sons ran Roto-Rooter in NC and VA for 30 years. While living in Winston, he attended UNC-G, where he got a Masters in History, a Masters in English and a Doctorate in English. Howard also taught Business Law at UNC-G. He and his sons later sold the franchises and he lived the remainder of his years with his wife in their Kernersville NC home.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon, Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 12, at the funeral home.
