KERNERSVILLE - Houston Lott Hastings, 82, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at his home. He was born March 6, 1930 in Forsyth Co. to the late Henry Lake and Lena Caroline Money Hastings. Houston was a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church and was a founding member and volunteer fireman at Beeson Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department for most of his adult life. Retiring after 25 years of service, Houston was a dedicated employee of Siemens Westinghouse and cherished his time there. Houston loved camping, fishing, baseball and spending time with his family and friends, and above all else, sharing stories about his life and work. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Norman Hastings. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Murphy Stephens Hastings of the home; two daughters, Denise Ring (Jerry) of Colfax, Melissa Busch (Wayne) of Toronto, Canada; two sons, Kenneth Hastings (Hanan) of Mt. Airy, MD, Bryan Hastings (Christy) of Haymarket, VA; five grandchildren, Jennifer Pike (Jonathan), Jason Ring ( Lara), Zachary, Ellie, and Charles; six great-grandchildren, Luke, Lillian, Tristan, Kaia, Savannah, and Aidan; three sisters, Laura Yow (Joe) of Galax, VA, Geraldine Swaim of Kernersville and Wanda Morris of Walkertown; one brother, Tom Hastings of Kernersville; and several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Cash, Rev. Ellis Rouse, and Rev. Phil Bauguess officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel and at other times at the home of Mr. Hastings. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, 794 Sedge Garden Road, Kernersville, NC 27284 or Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to their neighbors, friends, family and church family for their many acts of kindness. Houston was deeply touched by all of the many blessings he received as his health declined.
