Horace Leroy Simpson

WALKERTOWN - Horace Leroy Simpson, 67, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2013 after a brief and sudden illness. He was born August 26, 1946 in Forsyth Co. to the late Cannon Leroy and Lillian Hartley Simpson. Horace was employed by Auto Supply and then Auto Paint and Equipment for many years; he later founded his own company Automotive Equipment. Horace was actively involved in NASCAR racing, beginning in 1968 working for Richard Childress Racing, and was one of the original ""Flying Aces"" pit crew for the late Dale Earnhart. He later worked for both Jr. Johnson and Kenny Bernstein Racing. In 2004 he and his grandson formed Chris Taylor Racing and Chris drove for several years. Horace loved and enjoyed almost all types of racing from go-karts, model scales and up. In 2000 he developed Dan River Angus Farm in Stokes Co.; he was a member of the American Angus Association and the Cattleman's Association. His passion for his animals has kept this an ongoing project that he loved and enjoyed. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Simpson. Surviving are his fiancé and partner, Donna Causey of the home; daughters, Debbie (Darren) Taylor, Donna (Neal) Joyce; grandsons, Chris Taylor (special friend, Whitney Humphries) and Zachary Joyce; sister, Janie (Tommy) Gilbert, brothers, Henry (Pat) Simpson, Wayne (Pam) Simpson, David Keith (Judy) Simpson; and several nieces and nephews. He was loved and cared for by many close friends and family and will be dearly missed. A Funeral Service will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel with Pastor Byerly officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2013 at the funeral home. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff on the 5th floor CICU at Forsyth Medical Center for all the care and compassion shown to Horace and his family.
