Horace Mcrae

Mr. Horace Everett McRae, 87, of Winston-Salem, died on Wednesday, October 17, 2018.  Horace was born on December 2, 1930, in Memphis, TN, to the late Dr. L.J. McRae and Heelene McRae.  After starting school his family moved to Bells, TN where he graduated from Bells High School.  At the start of the Korean War he dropped out of Memphis State College to join the Air Force.  As part of the 28th Reconnaissance Wing, he served in England and at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD before returning to Memphis State College where he earned BS and MBA degrees in Business Administration.  Horace was also a graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin.  Horace’s 40+ years in banking began with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, U.S. Treasury Department as a National Bank Examiner where he traveled extensively throughout the South and Midwest.  During his 9 years with the U.S. Treasury he became administrative assistant to William B. Camp, who would later become Comptroller for the U.S. Treasury.  After leaving this position Horace worked for several banks including Exchange Security in Birmingham, AL, Southern National Bank, Lumberton, NC, and BB&T, in Winston-Salem.  In 1976, Horace received the Boss of the Year Award from the Lumberton Jaycees.  After retiring from BB&T in 1998, Horace had a second career as co-owner of the first Great Clips franchise in Winston-Salem.  After his military service Horace earned his pilot’s license and used his airplane to visit his future wife, Beatrice, on weekends while he was a National Bank Examiner.  Horace was active in several Baptist churches singing in choirs and served in various roles in supporting mission work.  He served on the NC Baptist Foundation Board of Directors for two terms as both a board member and president.  Horace loved music and was a co-founder of the Robeson County Choral.  He enjoyed traveling making trips around the country and to Europe and South America.  He was an avid tennis, football, and basketball fan.  Horace was an encouraging supporter of all his family’s activities; he was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.  He will be dearly missed as we recall happy memories and give thanks for the years we had with him.  The family is most grateful for the wonderful care Horace received at the Sticht Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and at the Homestead Hills Skilled Nursing Center.  Horace is survived by his wife, Beatrice “Bea” McRae; one son, Bradford McRae and wife, Sarah of Northborough, MA and their sons, Ethan and Gavin; one daughter, Alisa McRae of Winston-Salem and her children, Patrick and Marcia; and four nieces, Annise Mock of Pensacola, FL, Russelyn Banke of Spartanburg, SC, Lauren Mohundro of Powder Springs, GA, and Anita Clair George of Hollywood, MD.  A service to celebrate Horace’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 28, 2018, at Ardmore Baptist Church with Dr. Gina M. Brock and Mr. Mike Nuckolls officiating.  A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Woman’s Missionary Union of North Carolina Trust Fund, 1200 Front Street, Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27609, Homestead Hills Memory Garden Trust Fund, 3250 Homestead Club Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or Ardmore Baptist Church Mission Venture Fund, 501 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.  Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the family of Mr. McRae.  Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
