Hilda Ann McDowell Smith

KERNERSVILLE-Hilda Ann McDowell Smith, 86, passed away Friday, December 18, 2009 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born June 19, 1923 in Forsyth Co. to the late Newton Dewitt and Gertrude Rierson McDowell. Hilda was a faithful member of Kernersville Seventh-Day Adventist Church. After graduating from Southern University in Collegedale, TN she worked as a surgical nurse in Orlando, FL until 1966. Her specialty was private duty nursing at area hospitals until she retired. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, ND and Roger McDowell; and one sister, Gwendolyn Knight. Surviving are her husband, Windell B. Smith of the home; two sisters, Cleide Apple (Wayne) of Oak Ridge, and Maxine Creason (Bobby) of Winston Salem; four brothers, John W. McDowell of Trinity, Archie McDowell (Nancy) of Elkin, Dan McDowell (Aloma) of Winston Salem, Jerry McDowell (Linda) of Rural Hall; a sister in-law, Virgie McDowell of Maitland, Fl; Hilda was loved and adored by many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Kernersville Seventh-Day Adventist Church. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 pm Monday, December 21, 2009 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, NC 27103.
