Herbert Dutoit

On March 29th, 2021, Herbert (Herb) Latham DuToit, 90, joined countless friends and family members who patiently waited for him in the heavenly kingdom. Herb lived in Bermuda Run, NC and was the husband of Donna I (Shepard), the love of his life. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary three months ago. He left us with the usual fearless, nonconforming wit that will define his legacy. Herb began his career in machining, then road machinery and construction equipment. For a number of years, he relentlessly traveled the country by car. He was retired from Ingersoll-Rand Company, where he was recognized for the conception of the Rand-Air division, among a long list of sales and management positions. He was notorious for accepting career challenges that others would not and which involved countless family moves and international travel. Herb enjoyed lake fishing. His annual favorite for many years was a family trip to Drummond Island in Michigan. Herb also enjoyed caring for his dogs, golfing, gardening, raising prize-winning roses and tending to whatever prized car was in his garage at the time. Survivors include his wife, Donna (Shepard); son, Herbert Frederick (Fred) DuToit of Clemmons, NC; daughters, Dawn Stewart of Winston-Salem, NC and Robin Shankweiler (Lew) of Salisbury, NC; 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Brook Latham; granddaughter, Rebecca Shankweiler. Donna and the family would like to give heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful caregivers, Rachel, Holly, Cheryl and Sydney, whose love and attention made it possible for Herb to remain in the comfort of his home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in memory of Herb to AARF, Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation of Winston-Salem.
