Henry Lindsay ""Ike""Raker, 88, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Sunday, November 29th, 2009. A native and life long resident of Winston-Salem, Ike was a loving husband, father and brother and a devoted servant to his family, his church and his community. He grew up in Christ Moravian Church and played in the Salem Band for 71 years. He served in the US Air Force during World War II. After his marriage to his beloved wife, Mary Katherine Raker, he joined Oak Summit United Methodist Church. He taught Sunday school and was a lay minister and active member of his church for 52 years. He worked for 36 years at the Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel until retirement. He believed in serving his community and volunteered throughout his work life and after retirement. He was an inspiration to everyone who knew him both spiritually and physically. His faith in God was constant and he was a motivator in his dedication to physical fitness. He was an avid swimmer and member of the YMCA for over 57 years. Ike was an assistant scoutmaster and served in scouting with his two sons for 10 years. He volunteered for 20 years at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Physical Therapy Department and was awarded The Inspiration Award by the Mayor's Committee for persons with disabilities. Ike also served meals on wheels for 23 years and donated over 8 and a half gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. He loved music and played saxophone and clarinet in the Winston-Salem Community Band, the Salem Moravian Band, and the Society Swing Band. Ike Raker is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Katherine Shugart Raker, his son Mark Raker of Lewisville, NC, his daughter and son-in-law Melinda and Richard Halford of Black Mountain, NC, his son and daughter in-law Keith and Denise Raker of Cary, NC and his two grandsons Nathaniel and Garrett Raker, his brother and sister-in-law Lamar and Dorothy Raker. Preceding him in death are two sisters Florida Joyce and Edna Talley, four brothers Elmer, Horace, Bradley and Paul Raker. Reception and visitation will be held at 1:00 pm prior to the funeral service at 2:30 pm on Thursday December 3rd at Oak Summit United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Burial will be following the funeral at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Oak Summit United Methodist Church, 732 Oak Summit Road, Winston-Salem, 27105 or the Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center, 231 Melrose St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
