Mr. Henry Kerley Young, 79, of Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2021.
Kerley was born September 15, 1941 in Davie County to Wayne Cecil Young and Katheryn Kerley Young. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Randolph, the aircraft carrier that recovered the first two Project Mercury space missions in which John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. He also worked at Lowe’s Hardware for over 30 years, where he made many friends with his amazing sense of humor. Above all, he was a great father and deeply devoted husband to his wife, Joy Powers Young, who precedes him in death, along with his parents.
Kerley is survived by his brothers, Kim Young (Sheila), Steve Young, and Jan Young; sister, Olivia Applegate (Dan); mother-in-law, Lois Thomas Powers; stepchildren, Ashley Baker and Erica Butner; granddaughter, Amanda Marlow; nephews, Jeremy Young and Terry Deal; nieces, Jaime Wilkie, Julie Shinault, Annette Young, Shanda Young, and Stephanie Gardener; and special friend, Teena “Twigs” Graveline.
A graveside service with military honors will be held Friday, February 12, 2021 at 12 noon at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC, with Pastor Mike Duffield officiating.
