Henry Z. 'Red' Jackson, Sr.

Henry Z. ""Red"" Jackson, Sr., 87, departed for his heavenly home and the arms of his dear Savior on February 14, 2012. Red was born on October 28, 1924 in Iredell County, North Carolina to Zebedee D. Jackson and Bertha Wallace Jackson. He graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1941 and continued his education at Draughn Business College, earning a business certificate in 1943. Mr. Jackson enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as a pilot and flight instructor before his discharge as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1945. All three Jackson brothers served their country during World War II, and in recognition of their service all three participated in the Triad Flight of Honor trip that visited Washington, DC in May 2011. Red spent nearly 30 years in the retail clothing business, principally as Vice-President and business office manager of Cahill & Swain and manager of the Parkway Plaza branch store. He was a longtime member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church, where he served as Elder and Trustee, sang in the choir, and played in the church band. He sang in the Winston-Salem Mozart Club's annual presentation of ""Messiah"" for over 20 years, and was just months short of having played in the band for the annual Moravian Easter Sunrise Service for the 75th year. His love of music encompassed three generations of the Jackson family, many of whom participated in the production of a CD album of hymns and Christian songs entitled ""Under My Wings"" completed in July 2011. Red was a founding member of the Konnoak Hills Lions Club in 1964 and served his club as an officer of every capacity in the local club in addition to several district and state offices. Conversations with Red quickly turned to recollections of time spent with his family and reflections of the deep love he shared with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom he considered a great blessing. His death leaves a great empty void in the heart of those he loved and who loved him. ""We love you!"" Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by both parents and his loving wife Grace Swain Jackson, granddaughter Lauren Worley, and brother Zane Gray Jackson. He is survived by his loving and caring wife Vicki Summey Jackson; sons Hank (Carol) Jackson (Weaverville, NC) and Jeff Jackson, daughter Terrie Jackson Miller and step-daughters Charlotte (Greg) Dorn and Crystal (Casey) Joyner, all of Winston-Salem. Red had the pleasure of being G Daddy to ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: granddaughters Katie and Samantha Worley, Kimberly and Melissa Jackson, Grayce Dorn and Sadie Joyner; grandsons Zeb Worley, Wayland and Weston Joyner; and great-granddaughters Grace and Sierra Worley. Mr. Jackson is survived by his brother J. Wesley (Ruth) Jackson, sister Geraldine Jackson Jones, and sister-in-law Nancy Lutz Jackson. Additional survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are being provided by Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday evening February 17 from 6 PM to 8 PM. The service of celebration of his life will be conducted at 11 AM Saturday February 18 at Konnoak Hills Moravian Church, Rev. John Rights presiding. Interment will follow in God's Acre Moravian graveyard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to Sunnyside Ministry or Konnoak Hills Moravian Church in Winston-Salem.
