Henry Lee Campbell, Sr., 89, has gone to be with the Lord. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and under the care of the wonderful staff at Kate B Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC, on the afternoon of Sunday, November 19, 2023.
Henry was born on September 30, 1934, in Winston-Salem to the late William Harry Campbell and Frankie Livengood Campbell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his recently departed and beloved wife, Tommye Cartner Campbell; his granddaughter, Chelsea Burnette Szerelmey; and his sister, Judy Campbell Bowles. He is survived by his daughters, Misty Burnette (Mike) and Karen Smith; son, Lee Campbell (Beth); grandsons, Brian Burnette (Monica), Justin Campbell, and Jacob Campbell; and great-grandson, Weston Szerelmey.
Henry was an exceptionally hard-working and determined individual, deeply devoted to both his career and his family. He was the embodiment of his life-long motto: “Anything worth having is worth working for.” He hitchhiked his way through college at Mars Hill and NC State University, pursuing a degree in engineering, became employed as a draftsman at Western Electric in Winston-Salem, and married Tommye, the love of his life, at the age of 23. As sole provider for his growing family, he studied evenings to become a licensed Professional Engineer and further advance his career, ultimately retiring as senior environmental engineer at AT&T. His hands were never idle. He was an accomplished woodworker and artist, leaving a treasure trove of furniture and figurines for his legacy. Above all, he was a caregiver, always putting others before himself. No need was too great; no task, more important. He was a blessing and role model to all who had the great fortune of knowing him.
A graveside service will be held 1PM Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Clarksbury Methodist Church in Harmony, NC, Pastor Charlie Curtis officiating. Arrangements are by Hayworth-Miller Funeral Homes in Winston-Salem. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Henry’s memory to Kate B Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 (www.trellissupport.org/content/ways-give) or Clarksbury Methodist Church, 924 E Memorial Hwy, Harmony, NC 28634.
