Ms. Helen “Maxine” Sheppard Hatcher, 94, passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at her home. She was born in Bluefield, WV on January 28, 1927, the daughter of the late Ruffin Jackson Sheppard and Elah May Jessup Sheppard. Maxine was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and helped with Bible School. She worked at the Fabric Center in Walkertown for 23 years and loved doing crafts and growing beautiful flowers. Maxine loved her kitty cats. She was recognized for her outstanding contributions to health research for her long-term commitment to the ARIC Study (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ronnie Spainhour; and a sister, Frances Williams. Maxine is survived by a son, Barry Dean Hatcher (Dawn) of Germanton; a daughter, Beverly Jean Spainhour of Kernersville; two grandchildren, Eddie Dean Hatcher (Deanna) of Germanton and Ronald Edward Spainhour “Rodney” (Dawn) of Kernersville; three great-grandchildren, Zack, Dustin and Krissy Hatcher all of Germanton; two nieces; and two nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 18, 2021, at Liberty Baptist Church with Pastor Gary Styers officiating. Entombment will follow in Gardens of Memory Mausoleum in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 Sunday evening, October 17, 2021, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial donations may be made to: Liberty Baptist Church.
