Helen Gray Ryan West

Mrs. Helen Gray Ryan West, 91, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, February 11, 2010 at her home. She was born September 13, 1918 in Forsyth County to Robert Calvin Ryan Sr. and Ruth Sink Ryan. Mrs. West was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church for the past 50 years where she worked in the nursery for 35 years, and was also a member of the Baker Bible Class. She loved to read and loved working in her flower garden. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren with whom she loved cooking for. Mrs. West was also a member of the Sunset Hills Homemakers Club and a leader for many years in the 4-H Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Zebedee West; a son, Mark Anthony; three sisters, Jane Katherine Hunter and husband John, Mansel Blake West and husband Leon, and Jewell Eleanor Kimel and husband Ralph; three brothers, George Howard and wife Sally, Forest Sink and wife Coleen, and Robert Calvin Ryan Jr. Surviving is one daughter, Molly West Hornick and husband David of Easley, SC; two sons, William Gray West and wife Norma of Advance, and Miles Gaylord West and wife Patricia Keith; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren and two on the way; one brother, Wayne Herman Ryan and wife Johnsie of Winston-Salem; and a sister-in-law, Frances Ryan of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, February 14 at New Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Byrne officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, February 13 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
