Helen Chadwick Walnes died on Easter Sunday morning on April 4, 2010 at the Brookridge Prince Health Care Center, Winston Salem, NC. She passed away quietly with her family by her side. She is lovingly survived by her daughters, Nancy W. Brake, and Eleanor W. Semerjian, son in-laws Gary Brake and George Semerjian and her grandchildren, Stephanie Kiel, David Henderson III and his wife, Jennifer Henderson, Adam Brake and his wife, Michele, Nancy Henderson and Paul Henderson and his wife, Kristin, and her great-grandchildren, Abby, Hannah, and Maddie Kiel, Cassie and Cameron Brake, and Anna Henderson. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Herbert L, Reginal G., and Walter R. Chadwick, sister Iva Bridgette all of Ludington, Michigan and Loretta Mitchell of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Helen was born in Ludington, Michigan, on February 27, 1921, the daughter of Rose Belle Rutledge and Charles W. Chadwick. She graduated from Manistee High School in 1938, and attended The Hackley Hospital School of Nursing, Muskegon Michigan, graduating with her Registered Nursing Diploma in 1942. In 1943 she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corp and was sent to the 35th Field Hospital in Tunisia where she was an operating room nurse. She served in the Mediterranean Theater Naples-Foggia Rome-Arno PO Valley and received the European Theater Campaign Ribbon. She married Lt. Paul A. Walnes on June 25, 1945, in Naples, Italy, and left the service on January 6, 1946. She supported her husband's 30 year military career and tours of duty at Camp Chafee, AK, Ft. Monmouth NJ, Fort Dix, NJ, Fort Sam Houston, TX, Fort Monroe, VA, Heidelberg Germany, and Ft. Benning, GA. She continued with her nursing career at Dixie Hospital, Hampton, VA and in the military hospital in Heidelberg, Germany. She was cited numerous times for her volunteer efforts at Ft. Benning, GA, ACS budget counseling office and also served her military and civilian communities giving Red Cross Mother/Baby classes and as a Girl Scout leader. She moved to Winston Salem, NC in 1994 after her husband's death and resided the past 9 years at Brookridge Prince Health Care Center where she was lovingly cared for by the wonderful supportive staff. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church, Kernersville, NC,. Her life was filled with love for her family, community and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, April 6th at the Hayworth Miller Funeral Home, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston Salem, NC, from 6-8 pm, and a funeral service at 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 7th. Burial will be at Arlington Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Paul.
