WINSTON-SALEM, NC-Mrs. Helen Smoot Sapp, 88, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2015 at Forest Heights Senior Living Center. Mrs. Sapp was born in Laurens, SC on September 25, 1926 to the late Thomas H. Smoot, Sr. and Ada Abernathy Smoot. Helen married her beloved husband, Harvey E. ""H. E."" Sapp, Jr. on December 23, 1946. She worked at Hanes Knitting prior to attending Barbazon Beauty School. Helen became a self-employed cosmetologist until her retirement in 1998. Helen was a charter member of Messiah Moravian Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir and served Messiah in many capacities including President of Women's Fellowship, President of Senior Friends, Sunday school teacher and Diener. Helen also sang for many years with The Morning Glories and Tabor Troopers. She was an avid cook and was well known for her chicken pies and pound cakes. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, H.E. Sapp, Jr.; one sister, Mary Smoot Sykes; and a brother, T.H. Smoot, Jr.. Mrs. Sapp is survived by two brothers, Bill Smoot (Nancy) of Clarksville, GA and John Smoot (Eunice) of Mocksville, NC; sister-in-law, Mildred Smoot of Winston-Salem; God children, Kathy Sapp Saylor (John) of Winston-Salem and Leisa Sapp Morrison (Chuck) of Clemmons, NC; a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harry and Pat Sapp of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Messiah Moravian Church with Rev. Jerry Harris and Rt. Rev. Graham Rights officiating. Interment will follow at Salem Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Forest Heights and Community Home Care and Hospice for the excellent care they provided to Helen. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Messiah Moravian Church, 1401 N. Peace Haven Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or organization of the donor's choice. ""Granny Helen"" as she was known to Jason, Leanna, Sydney and Kayla will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
