Helen Darnell Hurst

Helen Darnell Hurst of Winston-Salem passed from this life to the next at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care in Winston-Salem late Wednesday night. After a lengthy illness, she staged a courageous battle and was finally called home to heaven by her beloved Jesus to whom she had devoted much of the last 40 years of her life. Helen was born and raised in Winston-Salem, the eldest daughter of the late Roney Roosevelt Darnell and DeEtte Darnell James. She attended schools in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system. On Valentine's Day, 1949, Helen went to a dance with Wayne Hurst and this was the first step in uniting this young, red haired beauty with a dark haired, handsome young man. At the time, they were living across the street from each other on Jefferson Avenue. They attended Reynolds High School from which they both graduated. Later, on July 22, 1950, they were married at First Christian Church. Helen became a home maker and mother to four boys, Gilbert Wayne Hurst, Jr., Douglas Edwin Hurst, Donald Jeffrey Hurst, and John Timothy Hurst. While raising her children, she was a den mother, member of the PTA, worked on and received her real estate broker's license and maintained a busy life with her husband and children. She also had the voice of an angel and sang in the choir at church. She was proudest of her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior whom she accepted in April of 1970. Her love for her family and friends and all people that she met was shown in the way she witnessed and gave her testimony to others about her love for her Lord and her God. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years and participated as much as she could in the Sunday School Class taught by Frank Hinson. Left on earth for the moment are her husband of 61 years, Wayne Hurst; her four sons and their families, Gil, Linda and Michael Hurst, Doug and Theresa Hurst, Don, Lauren, Ben and Sam Hurst, John and Elisa Hurst; her siblings, brother Allie V. ""Buck"" Darnell and wife Tina Snow Darnell; her sister Mary Darnell Wood; and many nieces and nephews. Her dear friends Frank and Bonnie Hinson, Eva Jeffries, Don and Darlene Schmidt and their children Amber, Ashley and Jonathan, Ann Carty and many, many more are all looking for the day when we will be reunited in Heaven. Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Chapman and Rev. Don Schmidt officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Saturday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be 1:00 PM Monday, March 26, 2012 at Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Online condolences may be made at www. hayworth-miller.com.
