Miss Helen Eaton Coltrane of Winston-Salem, NC died March 1, 2012 at Liberty Commons of Springwood, formerly Springwood Care Center of Forsyth where she had been a resident for nine years. She was born February 25, 1931 in Winston-Salem and was the daughter of Jeffrey Smith Coltrane, Sr. and Sarah Nettie Hendricks Coltrane. She was a graduate of Old Town High School, Brevard Junior College, and High Point College where she earned an A.B. Degree in Religion and History in 1953. She retired in 1994 from the U.S. Army Special Services where she had been employed for 31 years as Director of Recreation and Leisure Activities for servicemen and their dependents at several military posts, including Frankfurt, Germany; Fort Eustis, Virginia; and Fort Drum, New York. At the time of her retirement she was working at The Pentagon in Virginia as an internal controls specialist. Earlier in her career she was Director of Christian Education at several churches including First Methodist Church, Laurinburg, NC; Chevy Chase Methodist Church, Chevy Chase, MD; and Francis Asbury and Mount Vernon Place Methodist Churches, both in Washington, DC. After her retirement in 1994 she moved back to Winston-Salem. She is survived by two sisters, Sarah E. Coltrane and Emma C. Philpott and husband Harry; a brother, Jeffrey Smith Coltrane, Jr.; a sister-in-law, Patsy S. King; a brother-in-law, Linnaeus F. Mock, Sr.; two nieces, four nephews, seven grandnieces, two grandnephews; and several cousins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia C. Mock; two brothers, William J. and Robert M. Coltrane; and a niece, Elizabeth Ann Philpott. A lifelong Methodist, she was a member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church where the funeral will take place Monday, March 5 at three o'clock with burial to follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Visitation will be Sunday, March 4 from three to five o'clock at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Silas Creek Parkway. Memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, 3543 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the caregivers at Liberty Commons of Springwood who watched over her for the past nine years and also to Hospice of Winston-Salem.
