Helen Shuford Butner

Mrs. Helen Shuford (Beam) Butner, 83, passed away Monday, December 21, 2015 at Wake Forest Baptist Health. A native of Gaston County, she was born on May 26, 1932 and was the only child of the late Robert McKinley Shuford and Pauline Ramsey Shuford. Mrs. Butner attended Sacret Heart Academy and was a graduate of Cramerton High School, Lenoir-Rhyne University and Winthrop University. She also attended University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Peabody University. Mrs. Butner had her Master Degrees in French, English, History and Criminology. She taught in Gastonia City Schools and Charlotte Mecklenberg Schools and a was co-owner of Tri-County Detective Agency. Surviving are her daughter, Jennifer Berrier (husband Donnie) and two grandchildren, Helena and Rylan Berrier, all of Advance. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at Gaston Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Michael C. Comer officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lutheran Chapel Church, 702 North New Hope Rd., Gastonia, NC 28054.
