Mr. Hassel Cox, 81 of Kernersville, NC, a loving husband, father and grandfather passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center. Hassel was born March 10, 1930 in Slab Fork, West Virginia to the late Ted and Grace Hall Cox. He worked in the New River and Pocahontas Coal Mines before joining the US Army in 1949. Hassel was awarded the Occupation Medal while serving in Japan. He fought courageously in Korea, receiving a Purple Heart for the wounds he suffered in battle. After the war, Hassel's passion was as an advocate for the Disabled American Veterans, giving untold time and effort to pass legislation for these brave Americans. He was rewarded by the Governor of North Carolina with the Long Leaf Pine Award in recognition for his contributions for the DAV and was recognized nationally by President Clinton. He proudly served as the DAV Commander of Davie County and was the North Carolina State Commander in 1993-1994. He was a very devoted member of AA, serving as a speaker and counselor. He retired as Service Manager from Regal Oldsmobile. As long as his health permitted. he was faithful in his attendance at Oaklawn Baptst Church. Hassel wanted to be remembered that he loved Jesus Christ, trusting him as his Saviour and he wanted everyone to be happy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joy Wilson. Surviving to cherish his memory is the love of his life, his wife of 21 years, Barbara DeLappe Cox of the home, and his children Judy Wilson, Bobbie Thacker, Kenneth Cox and wife Karen, Catherine DeLappe, Shannon Gray and husband David, Melani Pratt, Lee Sizemore and wife Bonnie, Beattie Seats and husband Kenny, Connie Miller. Grandchildren Joel Wilson and wife Brooke, Jason Thacker, Brandi Haymore and husband Ryan, Kevin Cox and wife Crystal, Kory Cox and wife Shannon, Kelly Cox, Anthony Love, Kailah Love, Patrick Love,Leah Frye and husband George, David Sizemore, Kina Boles and husband Joe, Shannon Queen and husband Kelly. Great grandchildren: Tyler, Brandon and Kelsi Wilson, Lauren Bright, Charli and Addie Queen, Sarah Frye, Hannah Boles, Becca Dickens. Also survived by two sisters, Shirley Byerly and Mary Leigh Hunter. The Cox Family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Thursday February 16 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The Funeral Service will be conducted at Oaklawn Baptist Church on Friday February 17th at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.
