Mr. Harvey Russell Stewart, Jr., 92, of Winston-Salem died peacefully Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at the Hinkle Hospice Home after battling Dementia. He was born September 12, 1923 in Davidson County, the son of the late, Harvey Russell Stewart, Sr. and Lillie Byerly Stewart. He grew up on a farm in Davidson County during the Great Depression where his work ethic, honesty and integrity were put into practice. Mr. Stewart was a member of Bethlehem Church and was a graduate of Wallburg High School. He served with the US Navy during World War II as a radioman in the European Theater. After the war he served in the Department of the Navy's Civil Service for the local VA office in Winston-Salem and later worked for Western Electric as an Electrical Inspector. He found his true passion later working for the US Air Force in Cape Canaveral, FL in the early days of NASA at their missile testing site. While at NASA he worked as a Cost Estimator in the Quality Assurance Department for the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab and Space Shuttle programs. His NASA tour also stationed him at the Michoud Assembly Center in New Orleans, LA and then the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL where he retired in 1981. After retiring he returned to his NC family roots where he built his own home and farmed his land. He was a staple at the Farmers Market at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds for 30 years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Josie S. Eller and his brother, James Stewart. Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Elizabeth T. Stewart; his brother, Johnnie L. Stewart; his daughter, Barbara S. Stewart; his son, Don R. Stewart; his grandson, Matthew R. Stewart; and his granddaughter, Monica S. Stewart. The funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 AM at Bethlehem Church with Pastor Rick Swaim officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Stewart will lie in state one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
