Mr. Harvey Landon Smith, Sr., 101, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, June 24, 2016. Mr. Smith was born on May 8, 1915 in Ringgold, Virginia, to Jay Hardin and Ruth Walton Smith. Mr. Smith was a buyer and plant manager with R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company from 1932 to 1977. He was a long time member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church since 1957, and was an usher at Mt. Tabor for forty years. Mr. Smith was predeceased by his wife, Cleo Lane Smith, brothers, Joseph Smith and Herbert Smith, and sisters, Doris Cleary and Irene Haynes. He is survived by his daughter, Sue Fan Ferguson, and husband, Tom, of West Palm Beach, Florida, and his son, Landon Smith, and wife, Valerie, of Kernersville; two sisters, Margaret Wade of Springfield, Virginia, and Marion Hart of Gainesville, Virginia; one brother, Dan Smith of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was an avid Duke basketball fan, and enjoyed gardening in his retirement years. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his family always came first in his life. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at Forsyth Memorial Park, officiated by Rev. Mark Key. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, NC 27103, or Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, 3543 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. His family would like to thank the remarkable staff at Arbor Ridge at Kernersville, his residence for the last two years, in addition to the staff at Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center and Kate B.
