Mr. Harvey Lee Hastings, of Walkertown, passed away on October 31, 2015 at the age of 92. He faced the last six years of health struggles with amazing courage and strength. Harvey was born on June 9, 1923 in Forsyth County to the late Paul Burr and Edna Morris Hastings. He was a graduate of Mineral Springs High School. Harvey served in World War II, landing in Normandy in June 1944. He served in England, France, Germany, and Belgium. He was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries he received at Chateau Thierry in France. He participated in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge, where the 4th Cavalry received a Presidential Unit Citation for taking Bogheim, Germany. Harvey met the love of his life, Dorothy (Dot) Myers at a basketball game in the Hanes gym in 1945. They were married for 65 years. Harvey was a lifelong member of Love's United Methodist Church in Walkertown, NC. He was especially good at delivering meals, making chicken pies, and visiting friends on behalf of the church. Harvey loved to travel with Dot and they visited 49 states and 7 countries after his retirement from RJ Reynolds. But his greatest delight came from his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Harvey always had candy for his grandchildren. He rode them around the yard on the lawnmower and he fished with them at the beach. He liked to carry the grandchildren and great grandchildren around to ""see some things."" With his kind and gentle manner, he was the perfect Daddy, Granddaddy, and Papaw.
Harvey was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Myers Hastings; and a brother Paul Morris Hastings.
Surviving are a daughter, Carol Hastings Holleman (Steve) of Kernersville; a son, Michael L. Hastings (Linda) of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Jennifer Holleman Allen (Jeff), Jeffrey Holleman (Audra), and Julie Holleman Tate (Michael); five great grandchildren, Matthew Allen, Henry Holleman, Anna Leigh Holleman, Kaitlyn Tate, and Emily Tate; and a sister, Betty Hastings Ford of Walkertown.
