Harry Courtland Snavely, 92, passed away peacefully Monday, April 4, 2016 at his home in Winston-Salem. Harry, known to many as ""Clyde"", was born in Lynchburg, Va. on February 20, 1924 to the late Elmer David Snavely and Maude Lee Johnson Snavely. His childhood passion and mastery of building model airplanes led to his graduation as an aerospace engineer from N.C. State University. He then trained with the Navy Aircorp to become a fighter pilot during WWII. Following his service in the Navy, he moved to Monrovia, California and was employed by Aerojet. This is where he married his beloved wife of 59 years, the late Ramona Rodgers Snavely, a Winston-Salem native. They soon resettled in Winston-Salem where he worked with Bell Laboratories creating gyroscopes for missile guidance systems. After 31 years, he retired in 1981, and enjoyed his hobby of designing and building his own banjos, called the ""Clyde"". He also enjoyed gardening, riding his tractor, and projects of precision craftsmanship in his home machine shop. This sweet, gentle, loving man is survived by his son, Alan Neal Snavely of Chapel Hill, N.C. and his daughter, Linda Snavely Culpepper of Roanoke Va. He is also survived by his two granddaughters, Erin Culpepper Nichols of Jonesboro, AR, and Bonnie Courtland Culpepper of Denver, Co. His family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to his home caregivers during his later years. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, April 8, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forsyth Audubon Society and UNC-TV.
