Harry Lee Carithers

CARITHERS RURAL HALL, Mr. Harry Lee Carithers, 77, passed away Tuesday June 9, 2009 at the Brian Center in Winston-Salem where he was a resident. Harry was born in Forsyth County on February 18, 1932 the son of the late J. N. B. and Minnie Alderman Carithers. He had retired as owner and agent at Harry Carithers Nationwide Insurance Agency in Rural Hall. He also owned North Forsyth Reality Company for a number of years. Harry was very active in his community serving in numerous capacities. In the early years of the Rural Hall Fire Department he would be one of the first to respond to a fire call, living just across the street from the station, he also served as the first Mayor of The Town of Rural Hall following its incorporation. He had been very active in both the Lions Club and served as the assistant Scout Master with Troop # 914. He served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. For more than 35 years Harry enjoyed his second home in Belhaven, NC on the Pungo River, where he became an avid hunter and fisherman and Wildlife enthusiast. Harry was preceded in death by his wife Silbie Holt Carithers, a sister Janie Morgan and five brothers Eugene (Jr.), Jack, Buddy, Jimmie and Mack Carithers. Surviving is a daughter Linda Hart, a son Steve Carithers and wife Janet all of Rural Hall, two granddaughters Allison Carithers of Rural Hall and Michelle Allison and husband Randy of Belews Creek, one great granddaughter Reagan Allison of Belews Creek, a very special friend Johnnie Spencer and three special cousins Donnie, Rosa and Bill. A Memorial Service will be conducted 11:00 AM Friday, June 12, 2009 at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall with Rev. Barry Clement officiating. The Carithers family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home and request that memorial donations be made to The Rural Hall Fire Department, P O Box 549, Rural Hall, NC 27045 or the NC Lions Club Foundation / Camp Dogwood, P O Box 39, Sherrills Ford, NC 28673
