Mr. Harry Glenn Ashburn, 85, passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, December 14, 2011. He was born in Stokes County to the late James Ernest and Vallie Boyles Ashburn. Mr. Ashburn was a life-long resident of King. After graduating from King High School, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the European Theater of World War II. He earned the rank of sergeant and worked at Eisenhower's Headquarters. After World War II, Mr. Ashburn graduated from Draughon Business College and attended UNC-Chapel Hill. He worked for several years as an accountant at R.J. Reynolds and then formed his own accounting firm, Ashburn Accounting, which he operated for 40 years. In addition, Mr. Ashburn operated Ashburn Real Estate and had many other business ventures that he enjoyed with area businessmen and friends. Mr. Ashburn was a former member of the King American Legion where he served as secretary-treasurer of the Stokes County Fair. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the former Peoples, now the First Citizens Bank of King. In addition to his parents, Mr. Ashburn was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Cora Ann Ashburn, his brother, Rex Ashburn, sister-in-laws, Nina Lawson and Dorothy Tuttle, brother-in-laws, C.R. Moser, Arvol Helpler, William Tuttle, Carl Lawson, and Richard Tuttle. Mr. Ashburn is survived by his two daughters, Suzanne Demming and husband Jim of Kingsport, TN and Cindy Schneider and husband Joel of Raleigh: four grandchildren, James and Ashley Demming, and Emily and Andrew Schneider: four sister -in- laws, Hazel Ashburn, Louise Hepler, Mary Moser, and Viola Tuttle; also several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. A Funeral Service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 17 at Bethel United Methodist Church with Ralph Sproles, Minister officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 16 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, PO Box 1314, Rural Hall NC 27045. The family is most thankful to the staff of the Rosewood Health Center at the Cypress in Raleigh. Their loving and compassionate care is most appreciated.
