Harold Rice McCollum

MCCOLLUM Harold Rice McCollum, 86, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, April 30, 2013. He was born February 22, 1927 to Luther Calvin and Alma Rice McCollum. He received his primary education in the Reidsville Schools. During WWII, he was a Navy Hospital Corpsman and later as a reservist, was recalled to active duty in the Korean War. He was a Registered Medical Technologist for over 50 years and was employed by Hugh Chatham Hospital in Elkin and later, with Forsyth County as a Public Health Laboratory Director. He also worked part-time for Roche Biomedical Labs and served the towns of Elkin and Walkertown as Water Purification Plant Chemist. He was a past member of the North Carolina Public Health Association and served as chairman of the laboratory section. He also served as chairman of the staff of the Forsyth County Health Department and was an associate member of the Iwo Jima Survivors Group; a director of the George Preddy Memorial Foundation, Inc. and the Rockingham County Historical Society. His hobby was Civil War history and he and Mary visited every major battlefield between Gettysburg and New Orleans. Mr. McCollum was a member of Love's United Methodist Church and the Sawyer Sunday School class. He was married to the late Mary Frances Gunter of Durham and Reidsville. He is survived by three children, James McCollum (Carol) of Winston-Salem, Kay Rankin (Michael) of Charlotte and Carol Zavistoski (Stan) of Clemmons; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a very close friend, Gloria Vanhoy McCollum. For those who knew Harold, he leaves behind his beloved four-legged friend and solid companion, Jake. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 3 at Loves United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sybil Parks officiating. Burial will follow in Becks Baptist Church Cemetery with military rites by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
