Gwendolyn Mann Herndon Loggins died on Thursday, April 6, 2023. She was born on October 26, 1932, in Anderson, SC to the late E.M. Mann and Reba Chastain Mann. She was an honor graduate of West Gantt High School and attended Holmes Bible College. She worked as a bookkeeper, administrative assistant, and payroll supervisor. In retirement, she and her second husband, Thad, enjoyed traveling and volunteering, which became her passion. For many years she volunteered with Meals on Wheels, CONTACT, and as a reading tutor for WSFCS. She also enjoyed her work with the Salvation Army, League of Mercy, and Christmas Cheer project. With Covid-19 shutdowns, she still found a way to volunteer by becoming part of the Card Connection Program for The Shepherd Center of WS, up until her hospitalization in early March 2023.
She was preceded in death by her first husband and the father of her children, Rev. Norman C. Herndon; by her daughter, Melissa Gwen Herndon Laws; and by infant daughter Reba Margaret Herndon. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Thad R. Loggins; a stepson-in-law, Gary Mendenhall; a step-grandson, Daniel Loggins; and two brothers, Johnny M. Mann, and Billy F. “Sonny” Mann.
She is survived by her children: Cheryl (Michael) Tilley, Adina (Ron) Horner, Keith (Diane) Herndon, and son-in-law Joe (Elaine) Laws. She leaves behind six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one brother, Dr. Frank (Carolyn) Mann of Royston GA.
She is also survived by stepchildren Brenda Mendenhall, Roger (Nancy) Loggins, Robert (Melanie) Loggins, Randy (Susan) Loggins; seven step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; “adopted” daughters Brenda Bowman, Linda Shelton, and Renee Shipley. She also had a special friend, Mr. Jerry Ellegood.
She “adopted” and was “adopted by” many of the staff at Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center. They called her GG (Grandma Gwen) just like her grandchildren do, Mama Gwen, or Mama G. They were wonderful to her in her final five weeks of life, and the family appreciates all they did for her.
A celebration of life service will be held at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel at 2:00 pm on Saturday April 15, 2023. The family will receive friends from 12:45 – 1:45 preceding the service. Rev. Tim Wolfe will officiate, with the eulogy by Dr. Frank Mann. Burial will follow in Mt. Gur Cemetery. Her favorite color was purple so if you want to wear something purple in her memory, feel free to do so.
