Grover Burchette, Jr.

Mr. Grover Cleveland Burchette, Jr., 92, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 14, 2018, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Grover was born in Louisville, KY on July 21, 1925, to the late Grover Cleveland Burchette, Sr. and Elsie Schreiber Burchette. The family moved to Winston-Salem in 1928 where Grover resided the rest of his life. He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1943. Following graduation, he attended N.C. State University, earning a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1947. Returning to Winston-Salem to work for Western Electric, he married Elizabeth Leigh Cooke in June of 1951. They were married for 47 years until her death in 1998. Grover was an active member of First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem for 85 years, serving as a Deacon, choir member, and teacher of the Lydia class for 38 years. He enjoyed wood-working, photography, camping, and traveling. In 2000, Grover met Frances Jones, and they married in March 2002. In addition to his parents and first wife, Grover was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tina Jones Martin. He is survived by his wife, Frances Jones Burchette; sons, Mike Burchette (Ann) and Jeff Burchette; daughter, Pat Burchette O'Connor (Jim and his children, Lauren O'Connor and Kimberly Rhodes (Aaron)); granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Cooper; great-granddaughters, Avery and Anabelle Cooper; brother, Glynn Burchette (Emily). He is also survived by his wife's children from her previous marriage, Gregory Jones (Debbie), Troy Jones (Melissa), Keith Jones, Rosetta Jones, and Richard Jones (Dee); grandchildren, Kristine Chappell, Kourtney Jones, Britany Jones, Josh Jones, Skylar Jones, Jemma Juras, Jaggar Juras, and Rick Jones; and great-grandchildren, William Jones, Ashlyn Jones, Bailey Martin, Bryce Martin, and Brynna Martin. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, January 19, 2018, at First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem with Rev. David Williamson and Rev. Roy Cantrell officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Henry Brown Room at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Forsyth County, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103, www.hospicecarecenter.org. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the family of Mr. Burchette.
