Mrs. Gretta Ashworth (née Marshall), of Winston-Salem, formerly of Rochester, NY, passed away surrounded by family on March 15, 2017, at the age of 85. Gretta was born to parents Reid and Florence Marshall on August 2, 1931 in Rochester, NY. She grew up as younger sister to Mary Frick (nee Marshall), and graduated from Monroe High School. In 1951, she married high school sweetheart, Edward Ashworth. Gretta and Ed raised six children. Gretta was a skilled textile artist, publishing many needlework books while still actively working as a mother, moving from Rochester to Baltimore to High Point, North Carolina with Ed's career. In 1984, Gretta and Ed moved to Portland, OR where Gretta began a career working for the Veteran's Administration. They returned to New York state in 1990, to be closer to family. Gretta retired from the Veteran's Administration in Canandaigua, NY. Gretta embraced the philosophy of reinventing herself every ten years, so retirement for Gretta meant opening an antiques business and exploring estate sales and auctions throughout the Finger Lakes region. In 2011, Gretta returned to North Carolina, settling in Winston-Salem to be near her daughters and sons. In addition to her parents, Gretta was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Ashworth and her son Tim Ashworth. Gretta is survived by her daughters, Linda McLean and Beth Byrd (Bill Byrd) of Winston Salem, NC, Kate Lamal (Thomas Lamal) of Fairbanks, AK; her son, Mark Ashworth (Kim Ashworth) of Knoxville, TN and Marshall Ashworth of Winston Salem, NC; her sister Mary Frick; twelve grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Gretta will be interred at White Haven Cemetery in Rochester, NY near her husband, mother and son sometime in August 2017, where a memorial service will be held. Her friends at Creekside Terrace in Winston Salem are remembered with gratitude by Gretta and her family for the warm welcome they extended our beloved mother, and for their care and service. The family is grateful for condolences, but declines flowers and donations. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
