Gracie Ann Pegram Combs, age 86, awakened from her sleep in her eternal home on Thursday, June 8, 2023. Awaiting her arrival in Heaven were her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; the love of her life and husband, Royden Raymond Combs; parents, Clinton Odell and Annie Perdew Pegram; siblings, Dorothy Freeman, Floyd “Bill” Pegram, Ruby Latham, Zora Hemrick, Richard Pegram, Odell Pegram, Jr., Geneva Tucker, Annie “Pat” Rhymes, Donald Pegram; grandson, Eric Williams; great-granddaughter, Erica Williams; and many other family and friends. She grew up in Stokes County where she earned her diploma from Pine Hall High School. She attended Belews Creek Baptist Church where she sang in a quartet and caught the eye of the pastor’s son. After church services, numerous brothers, sisters, cousins, and friends constantly surrounded her. However, this did not deter the pastor’s son. Rather, he devised a plan to go along with his dad to visit sick church members at the Pegram home and so began the courtship and marriage that lasted over 67 years. He often said, “I would have married her sooner if I’d known it would be so good.” Clearly, he had found the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31. After marriage, the couple became members of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, and worshipped and served God there for over 56 years. Gracie enjoyed teaching children in Sunday school and in the Sunbeams ministry. She used her beautiful alto voice to sing about Jesus in the choir, a trio, a quartet, and with her husband and daughters. She also enjoyed the tradition of singing with her family in the car on road trips and around the piano at home. She retired from Western Electric Company/AT&T in 1984 and loved reminiscing with fellow retirees everywhere she went. She was beautiful in every way, an excellent cook, and the best, most loving wife, Mama, and Mamaw in the world. She taught us about Jesus by the way she lived and boldly shared His love with those around her. Mama, Mamaw, we love you and miss you so much, but we look forward to our reunion when we will rejoice with you in Heaven! Surviving are her daughters, Lisa Poole and husband Terry, Carrie Williams and husband Daniel; grandchildren, Kristin Pegram and husband Brian, Cary Poole and wife Jenny, Tabetha Bowman and husband Greg; great-grandchildren, Dakota, Boaz, and Shiloh Pegram, Abigail and Zachary Poole, Kiera Green, Braydon Williams, and Kylie Bryson; brother, Daniel Pegram; and many other dear family members. Her life celebration will be at Hayworth-Miller chapel, Rural Hall, 2 PM on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, with Rev. David Harman and Brother Joseph Brian Pegram officiating. Interment will follow the service at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 1 PM.
