Gordon Daniel Mathis

Mr. Gordon Daniel Mathis, 75, of 103 Cedar Lane, Advance, passed away Saturday evening, January 9, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 1, 1934 to Gordon and Gradie Henderson Mathis of Wilkes County. Gordon served in the U. S. Navy and had many exciting tours of duty in various places around the world. He retired from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 31 years of service. In 1958, he married the love of his life, Christa Maria Nagel of Berlin, Germany. The love story continued to grow as they had a daughter, Sayla Maria. Sayla is married to Jon R. Nedell and they have one son, Mathis Jacob Nedell, who was named after Gordon and was the light of his life. Gordon enjoyed the beautiful beaches of North Carolina, but even more than that he loved the peaks and valleys of Wilkes County where he roamed during his childhood and throughout his life. He will be greatly missed by his wife, daughter, grandson, and son-in-law, as well as by his brothers, sisters, and many wonderful friends. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel by Minister Suzi Leonard. A graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Cranberry Baptist Church Cemetery in Wilkes County. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Monday and requests that memorials be made to the Cranberry Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 9109 US 421, Roaring River, NC 28669.
