Gordon Bruce Hughes

WINSTON-SALEM
Gordon Bruce Hughes, 88, died on Monday, February 2, 2015 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was born on September 27, 1926 in Hanna, Wyoming to the late John Birtles Hughes and Georgia Weston Hughes. Gordon was a proud native of Wyoming, loving his western heritage. A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946. In 1950, Gordon was graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. While working on a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Kentucky, he met the love of his life, Ginnie and was recruited by Western Electric (AT&T) where he worked for 38 years in the cities of Pueblo, Colorado; El Paso, Texas; New York City and Winston-Salem. After retirement from AT&T, Gordon spent the next 24 years on the Board of Trustees for Forsyth Technical Community College, serving as Chair of the Board from 1992-1999. In November 2014, the college named the Computer and Electronics Engineering Technology Department in his honor. Gordon and his wife, Virginia have been active members of Knollwood Baptist Church since its inception in the 1950's. Gordon's other varied interests and activities over the decades include, but are certainly not limited to, the Twin City Lions Club, the American Red Cross, the Northwest North Carolina Development Association, the Civil Preparedness Council, the American Production and Inventory Control Society, the Emergency Management Advisory Council and the Greater Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce Education Council. Gordon generously supported the University of Wyoming, the University of Kentucky and his adopted Wake Forest University. His deep ties to Sigma Phi Epsilon and to Wake Forest Athletics are legend. For decades, Football Saturdays were special events, orchestrated by Gordon. Anyone fortunate enough to ""tailgate"" with Gordon will always remember his special Bloody Marys and his unfailing optimism for a Deacon victory! Gordon was preceded in death by his sister, Elaine Rodrigues; his first cousin, Charlie Stebner; his beloved Aunt Mary; and his daughter-in-law, Becky Ray. Gordon is survived by his wife of 63 years Virginia Lake Hughes; two daughters, Mary Beth Hughes of Tallulah Falls, Georgia and Patty Hughes Stone and husband John of Kernersville; a son Charles Bruce Hughes of Nashville, Tennessee; grandsons Jay Stone and wife Chelene; Thomas Stone and wife Heather; Tyler Cottrell and wife Jessica; Nate Bundrick; Eli Bundrick; granddaughters Sarah Stone Cunningham and husband Andrew; Eliza Hughes; great-grandchildren: Kaidyn Stone; Ivee Stone; Lillian Stone; Jack Stone; Georgia Cunningham; Leena Bundrick and Monroe Cottrell. He is also survived by nephews Marc, Gil, and Bobby Rodrigues. The holidays and weekends spent on the farm in the Brushy Mountains and on the water at Lake Hickory and all the Christmas Eve Open Houses on Kenwick Drive will be cherished forever. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Knollwood Baptist Church with Dr. Bob Setzer officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service. The family requests that memorials be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
