Gonzo Steven Wrenn, 42, after a long 9-year, hard-fought battle with cancer, entered into Heaven Friday, December 1st, 2023, at his home with his wife by his side. He was born August 11th, 1981, in High Point, NC to his late parents Barry & Ivy Mae Wrenn. He was preceded in death by an infant sister & loving grandparents.
He is survived by his honored wife Caitlin Lancaster Wrenn; Daughter Zoey Wrenn; Stepdaughter Dana Coates (daughter Emelia); Stepson Colton Moosmann; Sister Hollie Hawkins; Nieces Courtney Tuell (husband Brandon) & Haley Blackburn; A favorite nephew Cameron Johnson (wife Sierra); Mother & Father-in-law Brian & Suzanna Beeson Carden; Grandmother-in-law Sandra Beeson. He is also survived by a slew of childhood friends, bourbon & cigar friends, veteran brothers & sisters, mentors, & biker family.
Gonzo was a proud member of his JROTC program at Central Davidson High School. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Central Fire Department Station #37. His true work began in the United States Army, where he served diligently and proudly. It is said he was a soldier’s soldier. He served in the 2nd Infantry Division (Korea). He courageously served our country in Iraq from 2009-2010 deploying with the 3rd Infantry Division. He achieved the rank of Sergeant & completed his service with Company B 506 Infantry Regiment 101 Airborne Division (Currahee) after 5 years, 5 months of service.
His awards & decorations include Army Commendation Medal (2nd award), Army Achievement Medal (3rd award), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd award), Expert Infantryman Badge, & the Parachutist Badge.
Coming home & learning soon afterward of his terminal cancer diagnosis, he made the decision to live his life exactly how he wanted, to the complete & absolute fullest. Gonzo, his wife, children & friends traveled the world for the last several years & he never met a stranger. Gonzo & Caitlin had the honor of joining the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, ‘Zo’ & ‘Gypsy’ could be heard coming from a mile away on his FCK Cancer Victory ‘Vicky the Mistress’.
He tenaciously fought and courageously loved. He had the fortitude of generations past.
After the military his mission was to help other veterans in any way he could. A donation, a phone call, a good joke, a helping hand. Please find a local veteran’s organization & make a donation in his name. A celebration of life & service will be held at a later date.
