Gloria Petrea Griffin

Gloria Griffin, 68, of Winston-Salem went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 22nd after a very brief struggle with cancer. She was born in 1943 to Beulah Mae Lowder Petrea and Gurley Ray Petrea and lived her childhood years in Mt. Pleasant, NC surrounded by her sister, many aunts and uncles, and cousins. She studied X-Ray technology and worked in Charlotte and Raleigh. She married Charles W. Griffin on November 18, 1962 and soon after they moved to Winston-Salem. Gloria was a dedicated wife and mother and was involved in many activities with her children and their schools as they grew up. She worked as a tour guide at Old Salem for 25 years and loved to make candles and share stories at Candle Tea. Gloria was a wedding planner/director and taught classes on weddings for FTCC. She also worked for the Dixie Classic Fair for many years and served as an election precinct judge. Gloria spent countless hours giving of her talents and ideas to Ardmore Baptist Church. She served in many capacities over the years: Deacon, WMU leader, Greeter, J.L. Wilson Guest House/Missionary House Coordinator, Sanctuary Planning Team, and most recently Church Strategic Planning Team. Beyond her local church, she worked with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of NC as well as nationally and Pilot Mountain Baptist Association. Gloria had a strong passion for all people and for providing for their needs. She was on the Board for the SECU Family House and was proud of its recent opening. In the 80's and 90's, she was heavily involved with the Friendship Force and Citizens for International Understanding programs that support worldwide peace and friendship and was able to travel to many distant places including Germany, Japan, Brazil, Norway, and Thailand. Gloria loved music, reading, sewing, arranging flowers, and watching birds. She also loved to play cards in several bridge clubs. For vacation, Gloria loved the beach and family trips to Disney World. Surviving is Charles, her loving husband of nearly 49 years; two daughters, Beverly Mosley and husband, Steve of Towson, MD, and Kimberly Griffin of the home; one grandson, Patrick Mosley of Asheville, NC; one sister, Bebe Russell and nephew, Joseph McCully of Lindenwold, NJ; and many cousins and extended family members. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at Ardmore Baptist Church.
