Glenn Culp

Glenn Daniel Culp, known as “Dan” of 1244 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC, was born on May 24, 1940 in Albemarle, NC to Glenn Bradshaw Culp and Jessie Austin Culp of Cabarrus County.

After a lengthy illness, Dan departed this life on June 25, 2022 at Arbor Acres United Methodist Home in Winston-Salem with his wife Nancy at his side.

Dan held a NC professional engineering license; he was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School Class of 1958 and Wingate University Class of 1960 where he had received an Associate of Science Degree and the award for Excellence in Mathematics.

In 1962 he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from NC State University.  Following graduation, Dan married Nancy Jo Miller of Misenheimer, NC; Dan and Nancy had dated throughout high school and college and their fathers had been classmates at Pfeiffer College during the 1930’s and had remained friends throughout their lives.

After graduation, Dan joined the engineering department at Reynolds Tobacco Co., later Reynolds American, from which he retired as a Senior Principal Engineer with 33 years of service. Dan also served six years in the United States Army Reserve, was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).

Long a believer in Engineering and related fields as careers, in 1996 Dan and Nancy set up the Dan Culp Scholarship in Engineering Endowment to NC State. This gift provides a scholarship to an engineering student annually.

In the 1960’s when their first child was born, Dan and Nancy joined Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston Salem. There Dan served on visitation committees, on the Property Committee and as secretary of the Senior Adult Council.

In retirement, Dan enjoyed a variety of hobbies. He worked with digital photography regularly exhibiting and selling his photos locally. Ever in search of wildlife and wildflowers along the Yadkin River banks, Dan and his wife hiked regularly at Tanglewood Park where he photographed and documented the appearance by date and location of nearly 200 wildflowers.

Taking up genealogy on his 60th birthday, he traced more than 30 family lines with concentration on the Kolb family his research took him and his wife to Wolfsheim, Germany, where the family had lived in 1560. From his research and photos, he prepared a publication for his father’s family who had settled in Cabarrus County.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his loving wife of more than 60 years, Nancy Miller Culp; one son, Christopher Daniel Culp, Sr. (wife: Kathy) of Pfafftown; and one daughter, Anne Culp Fleeson, (husband: Will) of Lewisville, four grandchildren, Christopher Daniel Culp, Jr. of Raleigh, Nathan Daniel Culp (wife: Addy) of Clemmons, Mackenzie Elizabeth Culp of Pfafftown, and Lillianna Cedar Fleeson of Lewisville.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Misenheimer, NC.
